Dynamic Response Analysis of Projectile Target Penetration Based on an FE-SPH Adaptive Coupling Method

The penetration of projectiles into targets has a broad background in engineering. In this work, numerical simulations the projectile-target problem are conducted using Finite Element Method (FEM), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Element–Smoothed Adaptive Coupling (FE-SPH ACM) based on LS-DYNA software package. First, experiments aluminum ceramic simulated. experimental simulation results show that FE-SPH ACM better accuracy calculating debris cloud head velocity interface velocity, with an error no more than 4%. Furthermore, we use to investigate anti-penetration performance aluminum/ceramic composite different combinations. We find reasonable layout can improve protective multi-layered target, especially target plates as front layer. addition, ballistic limit velocities for ceramic-aluminum ratios 3/7, 5/5 7/3 approximately 1300 m/s, 1400 m/s 1500 respectively. Obviously, increasing proportion materials enhance performance.
